Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are in Grant Township, Michigan.

  • We now have eggs available for purchase at farmers markets, or to add when you pick-up an online order!

  • We do not process them at our farm, they are done at the very well reviewed and trusted Wilcox Poultry in Brown City, Michigan.

  • The breed we raise — Freedom Rangers — take 9-10 weeks to reach processing age. Some more popular meat breeds take 7-8 weeks, and dual purpose or heritage breeds can take up to 18-20 weeks.

  • We order them through the mail from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio.

  • We are not in the business of cutting corners at JB’s. My animals’ health and well being is top priority and you can taste the difference that makes in your food.

Committing to growing pasture-raised meat is quite labor intensive. Providing protection, moving them to fresh grass daily, feeding them locally milled non-gmo products, finding a local small processor we can trust… it takes time, money, and care.

But we believe it’s worth it, and think you will too when you try our chicken.

  • Sometimes! You can find the story of Runty, our mascot, at the top of our Facebook page. He is a chicken I kept from my very first batch of meat chickens.

Ultimately, every animal on our farm serves a purpose. They might be here to feed my family and the community, or they might just be cute and bring joy. All are equally important to me and all are treated with the same love, kindness, and respect.

  • Regenerative agriculture means that we manage our livestock in harmony with nature, not against it. You can read more about that on the Farming Practices tab in the drop down menu!

  • Chicken that is slow-grown and raised on pasture means they spend their lives outdoors, rotating to fresh grass daily, with time to soak up all the nutrients that develop tasty, tender meat.

  • Our chickens get to eat all the grass and bugs they can forage for, and are supplemented with a NON-GMO grain provided by a mill local to us.
