Frequently Asked Questions

  • We are in Grant Township, Michigan.

  • Not currently, but we hope to add a laying hen flock in the near future!

  • We do not process them at our farm, they are done at the very well reviewed and trusted Wilcox Poultry in Brown City, Michigan.

  • The breed we currently use (Freedom Rangers) takes 9-10 weeks to reach processing age. Some more popular meat breeds take 7-8 weeks, and dual purpose or heritage breeds can take up to 18-20 weeks.

  • We order them through the mail from Freedom Ranger Hatchery in Pennsylvania.

  • We are not in the business of cutting corners at JB’s. My animals’ health and well being is ALWAYS top priority and we will always be transparent about where your food is coming from.

Committing to growing pasture-raised meat is quite labor intensive, it’s not just throwing food and water to some chickens confined to a barn. Providing protection, moving them to fresh grass daily, feeding them locally milled non-gmo products, finding a local small processor we can trust… it takes time, money, and care.

The meat at the grocery store, raised in factory farms, might be cheaper now… but the downside it has on you and your family’s health will cost you in the long run. I promise you will taste and feel the difference that sunshine, clean living spaces, and fresh air does to your food.

  • Sometimes! You can find the story of Runty, our mascot, at the top of our Facebook page. She is a chicken I kept from my very first batch of meat chickens.

Ultimately, every animal on our farm serves a purpose. They might be here to feed my family and the community, or they might just be cute and bring joy. All are equally important to me and all are treated with the same love, kindness, and respect.

  • Regenerative agriculture means that we manage our livestock in harmony with nature, not against it. You can read more about that on the Farming Practices tab in the drop down menu!

  • Pasture raised means that the meat you receive has been rotationally grazed and spend their lives outdoors, never in a confinement barn.

  • Our chickens get to eat all the grass and bugs they can forage for, and are supplemented with a NON-GMO grain provided by a mill local to us.
