Farming Practices

JB’s Pastured Produce promotes raising healthy and happy livestock, because an animal that provides one of our essential needs deserves our respect and excellent care.

Our chickens spend their days in a rotational grazing system eating grass and bugs, supplemented with locally milled NON-GMO feed.

Rotational grazing is the practice of moving livestock through sections of a pasture on a regular basis, rather than allowing them to graze one large area all season. By moving our chickens to fresh grass daily, the grazing and fertilization impact can be more intentionally utilized. This promotes better growth, stronger soil structure, and improved drainage. Not only is it beneficial to the land, but our chickens get to enjoy consistently fresh forage and a clean environment! To keep our chickens safe from predators and poor weather, they are kept in completely enclosed mobile runs, called "chicken tractors". The chicken tractors are equipped with adjustable tarp walls to control air flow and sun/shade, and an automated watering system to ensure they never run out of clean water.

We feed on a 12 hour on/12 hour off schedule, so they are encouraged to do more than just eat and sleep (although they do enjoy a lot of both!) A chicken that grows too fast runs the risk of health issues, so giving them time off to do chicken-y things like forage is great for them and great for us!
