How to Find the Farm You Want to Shop With

So you’ve decided you want to try shopping from small farms…

Maybe you’ve realized that labels like “organic” or “free range” slapped on a package of meat doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it does. Or maybe you’re thinking that the way factory farmed meat looks and tastes just doesn’t feel right. Or maybe you just like the idea of supporting local small businesses and farmers! Whatever the reason, welcome to the community!

But how do you choose a farm that’s right for you? Here are a few questions I recommend asking in your search…

Do they offer full transparency?

Farmers who take pride in what they do want to share it with the community. Look for farms that want to educate the public, and willingly offer information about their standards and practices. Does their website and social media have details about their animal welfare standards, and how they’re raising your food? Are they willing to answer your questions openly and honestly? Some questions you might want to ask are…

  • Are your animals pasture-raised?

  • What do you feed your animals?

  • What are your rules on using any additives and antibiotics?

  • What are your environmental policies?

How does the community feel about them?

Ask around! The point of shopping direct from farmers is not just for better products, but to build a relationship with where your food comes from. A great place to do this is at farmer’s markets! Talk to fellow customers AND other vendors. Ask not only about their customer service, but how they fit in within the vendor community.

What are they doing to improve their farming operation?

I have yet to meet a local farmer that doesn’t love to “talk shop”. The ones who really put their heart and soul into their work know that there is almost always a way to “do it better”. So ask them what projects they are working on! It could be about improving animal welfare, product quality, sustainability, land and soil quality… Are they always working to expand their knowledge? Are they willing to challenge the norm and not cut corners?

When it comes down to it… trust your instincts! When you do your research, it’s hard to go wrong!
